Many growers report that magnesium supplementation shows poor results, mostly due to application misconceptions. Although EDTA chelated magnesium has much higher absorption efficiency than ordinary magnesium fertilizers, it can only give full play to its value when applied scientifically. Avoiding the following 4 common misconceptions can increase fertilizer efficiency by more than 30%.
The first misconception is "only supplementing magnesium when yellowing appears". Magnesium is a mobile element. Crops will prioritize transferring magnesium from old leaves to new leaves. When old leaf yellowing is visible to the naked eye, magnesium deficiency in the plant is already very serious, photosynthetic efficiency has long declined, and yield loss has already occurred. The correct approach is to apply preventively in advance during the rapid growth and fruit expansion stages, especially for fruits, vegetables and fruit trees with high magnesium demand. Regular supplementation is the key to stable yield and quality improvement.
The second misconception is mixing with high-concentration potassium and ammonium nitrogen fertilizers. Potassium ions, ammonium ions and magnesium ions have an absorption antagonistic relationship. Excessively high concentrations of potassium and ammonium in soil will significantly inhibit crop root absorption of magnesium, reducing the effect even if EDTA magnesium is applied. It is recommended to stagger the peak application periods or reduce the single mixing concentration, and avoid direct mixing with high-potassium foliar fertilizers during foliar spraying.
The third misconception is relying only on soil application and ignoring the emergency value of foliar spraying. Soil application of EDTA magnesium requires root absorption and translocation, with relatively slow effect. In high-incidence periods of nutrient deficiency and adversity stress, foliar spraying can quickly supplement magnesium directly through leaf stomata, relieving yellowing symptoms in 3-5 days, making it the first choice for emergency correction. Combining soil base application with foliar topdressing achieves the highest efficiency.
The fourth misconception is blindly increasing dosage regardless of soil pH. Although EDTA magnesium adapts to a wide soil pH range of 4.0-9.0, in strongly alkaline soils with pH > 8.5, the chelate structure will still gradually dissociate. Blindly increasing dosage at this time not only wastes cost, but may also aggravate soil salinization. It is recommended to apply together with acidic conditioners such as humic acid and fulvic acid to improve magnesium availability by reducing local rhizosphere pH.
Finally, two practical efficiency boosting tips: first, apply magnesium and boron together, as boron promotes magnesium transport and photosynthate accumulation, and the combination has significant synergistic effect; second, apply small amounts multiple times, especially in sandy soils with strong leaching, 3-4 split applications have higher absorption and utilization rate than one-time heavy application.
