Beyond Chlorosis Correction: How EDTA Iron Improves Crop Stress Resistance and Fruit Quality

2026-10-08

Many growers' understanding of EDTA iron is limited to correcting iron deficiency chlorosis, but in fact its role is far more than that. As a component of various key enzymes in crops, EDTA iron also plays a core role in improving stress resistance and fruit quality.

At the stress resistance level, iron participates in the construction of crop antioxidant enzyme systems, which can scavenge excess reactive oxygen species produced under stress and reduce cell damage caused by abiotic stresses such as drought, high temperature and salinity. Crops applied with EDTA iron have stronger root activity and higher water use efficiency, and the yield reduction under drought stress can be reduced by 15%-20%. At the same time, it can strengthen cell wall structure, reduce the infection probability of fungal diseases, and alleviate the incidence of leaf spot, rust and other diseases.

At the quality improvement level, sufficient iron supply ensures efficient crop photosynthesis and promotes the translocation of photosynthetic products to fruits. Practical data shows that after foliar spraying of EDTA iron on fruit trees, the soluble sugar content of fruits can increase by 8%-12%, anthocyanin synthesis is more sufficient, color uniformity is significantly improved, and fruit firmness is also increased to varying degrees. For greenhouse vegetables, EDTA iron can reduce the proportion of deformed fruits, improve the rate of commercial fruits, and extend the postharvest shelf life by 2-3 days.

Especially for high value-added crops such as citrus, grapes and strawberries, EDTA iron is not only an emergency product for correcting chlorosis, but also a regular input to achieve stable yield, improve quality and increase planting income.
